Chapter Three

I wondered if I was making a mistake. Walking into the restaurant, a knot of nerves sat in the pit of my stomach. I didn't really know what to expect. In my mind, I imagined what it would be like to see Parker again, to see her smile, and hear her laugh.

I didn't want to have high expectations. But she said this was a date. Just mentioning that four letter word evokes a certain level of emotions in me. I tried not to let it go to my head, but even as I got dressed I took into account. I wanted to have a casual and carefree vibe. I wanted to look good, but not so done up that it seemed like I spent a bunch of time getting ready for her.

A text message from Parker brought me back to reality. I'll be there in 10. Running a little late, sorry.

I worried she might not show up at all. That was her MO. This was the woman who basically fell off the face of the earth while we were dating.

My heart sunk, considering that she might stand me up. That was the last thing I wanted. Not that I expected anything from seeing her tonight. I just didn't want to end up feeling foolish. Not again. She put me through that once and it almost broke me.

Ten minutes turned into fifteen. Fifteen minutes turned into thirty. How much longer was I going to wait? I shifted my weight from one foot to the next, fidgeting and desperately tapping on my phone to hide the anxiety building inside.

If it was anyone else, I wouldn't have noticed the time passing by. Lord knows I was chronically late for everything. Because of what had happened in the past, though, it seemed my brain wanted to protect my heart. I told myself that she only had five more minutes and before I finish that thought she walked through the door with a bouquet of roses in one hand and a bouquet of sunflowers and the other.

"Hey," Parker smiled meekly. It was the same smile I fell in love with once upon a time. "I'm so sorry for being late. I didn't think it would take this long to get the flowers together, but I didn't want to show up empty-handed."

The frustration quickly faded away. She laid the bouquets in my arms. I close my eyes, letting the scent of fresh flowers filled my nose.

"It's okay. Thank you. I didn't expect this at all."

"It's the least that I can do. You didn't have to take time to meet with me tonight and I just wanted to show you how much I appreciate it."

"It's cool. Just two friends catching up, right?" I laughed nervously. That was what I had been telling myself for the last few days, trying to make plans with Parker more digestible. No big deal, right?

Except no matter how much I wanted to fool myself into thinking otherwise, this was way more than two friends chatting over drinks.
